Spirit Plate - A Simple, Meaningful Gesture

DSC04055.JPG

I had the privilege of getting invited to a Ghost Supper, which is an ancestral dinner, during the time of year when the veil is still thin between our worlds. During the meal, a “spirit plate” was created, which is a small portion of all the foods that were being eaten that evening. We offered it into the fire.

I felt this clear, strong appreciation coming from our ancestors. I felt them saying “thank you”. It felt like a clear acceptance of a gift for all the pain we are inflicting on the world right now. Through this very simple yet meaningful act, it puts us in a moment of remembering who has come before us and who may come after us.

There are so many things out of my control in this world, that I cannot fix. But when we offered the spirit plate to the ancestors as a token of our gratitude, it felt like a tangible action towards reconciliation and connection.

Beginner Tips:

  • At your next meal or next time you need to deepen a connection, put a little of your meal on a spirit plate and set it outside.
